How to search the Moving Image database

Use of *

Car* will call up all data which has car at the start this means cars, carnival, carrying, carry… will all be returned in the search.

Car will return Car only

All terms

By ticking on the all terms box this will return results which have all of the key words in each record.

For example: If you wanted to search for London Park and you clicked on the all terms box you would have all records which contain London and Park together in the same record but not necessarily next to each other.

Exact phrase

An exact phrase search will return precisely what you have typed and in this order.

For example:  If you wanted to search for London Bridge and you clicked on the Exact phrase box you would have all records which contain London Bridge exactly, next to each other.

Any terms

Using the any terms search will return all records which have the key words together in the same record or in separate records.

For example: If you wished to search London Bridge this would call all records which have London and/or Bridge.

Title only

This will search for the key words in the title only.

Search for records with videos

By clicking on this option the search result will only return records which have films or clips online.

Synonyms

Synonyms are an easy way to search a number of words under one keyword. To do this simply type in the descriptive key word for example animal, transport or colour then click on the ‘use related words and synonyms’ box this will bring up all data which relates to those words.
Please note that this option is still being set up and many more terms are yet to be included.

Collections

This drop down menu will allow you to use all of the above criteria and also search within a specific collection/category.

For example: If you would like to search for London within the BTA collection then just type London in the keyword area and then select the BTA on the drop down menu.

Start and End Dates

The start and end date function allows you to search within a specific era if it was London in the 1950- 1960’s you would like the use the drop down arrow to select the from 1950 to 1969.

List View and Thumbnail View

The list view and thumbnail view allow you to change how you would like to view your results either in list form or thumbnails.

Results per page

By changing this option you can view more or less results on each page simply by changing this icon up or down.

Advanced search

This page has extra function’s which will allow you to be more specific with what you are looking for.

 

How to view films

In order to view films in the Moving Image database, you need to have the video player RealPlayer installed on your computer. You can download it for free from www.real.com.

You need to turn off your pop up blocker

Once in a record description, you can play the complete film by clicking on the first Play button at the top of the description, or start playing the film from any time code by clicking on any Play button.

Once a film is being played, you can skip to a different time code within the description, simply by clicking on the time code you want to start the film from.

*Please note that if you are using a different browser than Internet Explorer (Firefox, Safari…) or if you are using a Mac, you will be able to view the films from the beginning but you will not be able to skip through.

 

How to manage your Projects

When browsing the Moving Image database, you can save complete records of sections from them in your own folders.

*Please note that you will need to disable your popup blockers

To save complete records in your Projects:
Once into a record description simply click on "Save to my Projects".
A window will pop up in which you can choose where to save the record: either in an existing project or in a new one which you can then create.

To save clips only in your Projects:
Once into a record description, you will see boxes next to each timecode within a description.
Select the sections you want to save in your projects by clicking the appropriate boxes.
Then click on
"Save to my Projects".
A window will pop up in which you can choose where to save your selection: either in an existing project or in a new one which you can then create.
